Day 12

English 101 Summer 2010 Day 12

Homework—Read TKAM Chapters 12-14 for Wednesday.

  1. Bonus points?
  2. Essay 2
    1. Explain the steps (the call, the mentors, the threshold etc) in the hero's journey for Scout (or Jem or Atticus?).
      1. Consider: What are Scout's Rites of Passage (Separation, Initiation, Return)?
      2. How does she follow the eight steps of the Hero's Journey?
      3. What does she learn about race, class, gender, laws/rules as she "comes of age"?
    2. The challenges of this essay
      1. This is not a physical journey.
      2. You have to be good a reading between the lines.
      3. It's not neatly formulated for archetypal criticism, but it's close.
      4. Evidence is spread out over 300 pages.
      5. Her voice is "naïve" and therefore sometimes hard to read. There's sarcasm and misunderstanding and irony in her accounts and we have to see them from adult eyes.
      6. Time is short.
    3. 3-5 pages, double spaced.
    4. Rough Draft due July 21st
    5. Final Draft due July 26th
  3. 11 groups
    1. Three illustrated panels that tell the story of the chapter.
    2. A significant quote from the chapter—re: Hero's Journey, if possible.

A title for the chapter.

I really liked the class activity we did 2day. I was able to obtain some significant qutoes and info. about this hero's journey!

I also enjoyed it. It really showed other people's perspectives and gave me more ideas for the heroes journey.

These are my notes 4 2day:

*Ch.1 The Dare, The Radley House- like a haunted house w/ a big monster in it, The Turtle Metaphor... "Lets try to make him come out"

*Ch.2 Scout learns from: Atticus, Cal, Mrs. Caroline, the letter... "You're starting off on the wrong foot in every way, my dear. Fold out your hand"

*Ch.3 Class: "He 'aint company Cal, he's just a Cunningham"

*Ch.4 Role play, Superstitionness: a credulous belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge (around Boo Radley)...
"I swear , Scout, sometimes you act so much like a girl..." & "There was more to it..." (page 50)

*Ch.6 Jem looses pants

*Ch. 7 The Radley Tree, At this point we are seeing another side of Boo from Tire trip, Tree, Pants: laughter, caring, observant, watching

*Ch.8 It Snowed & Snowman: Racisim?, The Fire, Blanket, Cake
